IVCBA, Deck the Halls for the Northern Lights Festival! A Column by Linda Offerdahl, IVCBA Executive Director

Truckee has one. Tahoe City has one. Even Kings Beach has one! That perfect tree beautifully decorated with holiday lighting. The one that represents the festive spirit in the community and in our hearts. The one that is a focal point for a community gathering. That perfect tree has eluded Incline Village Crystal Bay for years. Is it because most pine trees grow together in a cluster? Or that the tops have been lopped off to accommodate power poles? Or just that we find it difficult to even identify a town center?

However, Incline does have a “main street” running through the center of town, Tahoe Boulevard. The Northern Lights Festival, organized by IVCBA, the Incline Village Crystal Bay Visitor Center, and IVGID, decided to focus on lighting up the entire corridor between Northwood and Country Club instead of focusing on just one tree. Lighting displays in strategic locations on Tahoe Boulevard will join commercial areas such as Christmas Tree Village next to High Sierra Gardens, the plaza with Chase International and Rainbow Printing, the D.G. Marchetti Visitor Center, Lake Tahoe School, the Parkside Inn, and the Cornerstone Church.

Not to be kept in the dark, several standalone businesses and buildings throughout Incline also have festive displays. Lakeshore Realty across from Incline Beach always sets a high standard.

The Menath Insurance building owned by Hamilton Realty Finance promises to add to the lighting extravaganza. The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe lights up their entire property as well. A drive through residential neighborhoods illuminates lighting displays that often rival those in commercial areas.

Deck the Halls, a lighting contest is being rolled out this year to encourage every “Who in Whoville” to help light up their neighborhood, every “Mom and Pop” shop to decorate their storefronts, and every major business to enter the contest and compete for prizes. The Griswold prize will be awarded for the brightest lit commercial building and the brightest lit residence. Small businesses compete for the Most Creative. Become a lighting sponsor and join the many local businesses and individuals who have already donated to fund the holiday lighting of Incline Village. A big thank you goes to the Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation for their generous support. The Visitor Bureau also made a generous grant to Northern Lights.

Lighting is just the start! Northern Lights is a month-long celebration that includes many events throughout the holidays. “Christmas Begins This Weekend” is the theme for special events in the thrift stores run by The Village Church, Tahoe Family Solutions, and Pet Network. All are located in Village Center. Other traditionally loved events include the IVGID Santa Stop, TFS Brunch with Santa, TOCCATTA'S Messiah concert, and the Santa Pub Crawl is returning for 2021!
